Wilma Hughes Obituary

August 10 1930 - July 24 2022

 Wilma Ayers Hughes finally got to go home on July 24, 2022 with her family by her side. Wilma was born in Green Mountain, NC to the late Edgel Edward Ayers and Ora Fox Ayers. A beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she touched many lives and healed many people throughout her nursing career. Wilma earned her RN certification at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Banner Elk. During her nursing career she worked at Grace Hospital in Morganton, Community Hospital in Indianapolis, IN and at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. Due to her loving and caring spirit Wilma was always healing and caring for anyone in need. A devoted mother she worked 3rd shift her entire career so she could be home for her children during the day. As a mother of a special needs child she was an avid supporter of Special Olympics often attending local and state games. Due to the dedication of her and her husband Bob they were honored as the Special Olympics North Carolina family of the year in 1987. Wilma was a member of Bakersville Baptist Church where she taught sunday school for several years. Wilma loved cooking and gardening. She was well known for her wonderful homemade jelly. The family would like to thank her many loving caregivers. Wilma will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

 Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bob) Bruce Hughes, son David Bruce Hughes and wife Deborah, step-daughter Isobel Oldfather and husband Gail, daughter-in-law Sue Hughes. She is survived by stepsons Richard Ray Hughes of Bakersville, Thomas Warfield Hughes of Cathedral City CA, sons Daniel Edward Hughes and wife Denise of Concord CA, Robert Dale Hughes and wife Sharon of Asheville NC, John Daryl Hughes of Bakersville. Wilma was loved by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in the Bakersville Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Todd Ayers officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a contribution to Special Olympics Mitchell County, 144 Greenlee Dr. Spruce Pine NC 28705.
