Smith Hughes

Dateline: Green Mountain, NC

Smith Hughes age 90, of Pigeon Roost Rd. Green Mtn, NC went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2020.

Born July 26, 1930, he was a son of the late Seth and Mary Hughes, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Dorothy Barnett, Irene Maddox, Maxie Sturgill, Monie Barnett, brother J.D. Hughes and great-granddaughter Maggie Rae Young.

He was a lifelong member of Lower Pigeon Roost Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving and godly husband, daddy, paw, and papaw.

He was a combat Veteran serving in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 with a rank of E-4 Corporal. During service, he was awarded 2 Bronze Medal Service Stars. He retired from Henredon Furniture in 1995.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 65 years Regina Byrd Hughes, daughter Teresa Young (Mike), grandsons Brannon Young (Amy) and son Evan, Bryson Young (Erica) and son Asher, sister Mildred Peterson (Paul), brothers Billy Hughes (Nancy), and Dennis Hughes. Many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly and they loved him to the fullest also survive.

Smith's last few months of his illness his greatest desire was to go be with the Lord and Maggie.

A graveside service will be held Friday, October 16, 2020 at 2:00PM at Bennett Cemetery (Pigeon Roost Rd) with Pastor Marvin Miller officiating, all are welcome and we ask that you bring and wear a mask due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Sgt. EL Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

The family would like to thank the nurses and care received from Hospice and Palliative Care of The Blue Ridge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice or to Maggie Young Memorial Scholarship Fund at UCB Bakersville, NC.
