Raymond Ross Cantrell, Sr., age 77, of Bakersville, NC, entered his heavenly home on Saturday, January 22, 2022. A native of Polk County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Nellie Fowler Cantrell. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Johnny and Jack, sisters Vera Brigman, Judy Brooks, and Sue Jamison.
Raymond entered the United States Marine Corps in 1965. His service included Cuba and Vietnam, where he served in the 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines Hotel Co. He was proud to serve his country.
He met and married Patricia Miller in 1967, and soon thereafter they moved to Mitchell County. Raymond served his family the same as he did his country, with honor and loyalty.
Raymond grew up as a farmer, his family working for Biltmore Dairies. In his post-service life, he was a very talented man who had many trades including carpenter, police officer in Spruce Pine, Chief of Bakersville Police Department, millwright worker, and various other skills. He also served on the Bakersville Fire Department for many years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed competitive bowling.
Raymond and Pat raised one son, Raymond, Jr., and were blessed with two granddaughters who were very special to them.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat Cantrell, one son, Raymond Cantrell, Jr. (Ellen) two granddaughters, Mahala Cantrell (Vince Runion) and Autumn Cantrell Smith (William), three great grandchildren, Morgan, Greyson, and Kaleb Smith, siblings Glen Cantrell (Sylvia) of Morganton, and Sara Owensby of Nebo, NC.
The family will announce a celebration of life service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that any memorial donations be made to the Mitchell County Marine Corps League, c/o Bert Nunley, PO Box 514, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
