Nancy Elizabeth Garst Whitson, 78 of Green Mountain, joined her heavenly Father in the early hours of Monday, January 15, 2024 in the presence of her family.
Nancy was born January 8, 1946, and grew up in East Tennessee. She was the devoted daughter of the late John and Francis Garst. One of eleven children, she was preceded in death by her brothers – Dean, Larry, Carl, Carol, Donald, Roy, Michael, and Bobby. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Sue. Surviving is her brother Buster, of Jonesborough.
Nancy was married to her husband, Rev. Roy Whitson for almost 64 years. She was a loving and supportive pastor’s wife. Roy’s ministry greatly benefited from having her by his side. Nancy had seven children, all of North Carolina, and is preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Reasia Hoilman. Surviving are Roger Whitson, and wife Elaine, of Green Mountain, Beaver Whitson, and wife Evelyn, of Green Mountain, Donna Carver, and husband Randy, of Elk Park, Dulcey Sheppard, and late husband Danny, of Elk Park, Rebecca Gwyn, of Lincolnton, and Sharon Thomas, and husband Daniel, of Green Mountain. Nancy had twenty-two grandchildren and forty-three great-grandchildren, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Matthew Gwyn.
Nancy was a light to all who knew her and made everyone feel welcome and loved in her home. She enjoyed hosting family dinners, working outside in her garden, and singing in the choir at church. Nancy faithfully attended Pilgrims Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, where Roy is the pastor.
Services will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 7:00PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with Reverends Roger Whitson and Ricky Birchfield officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Graveside service will be held at Whitson Family Cemetery on Big Brush Creek Road on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 11:00AM.
