June Helen (Hughes) Wilson

June Helen Hughes Wilson, 98, formerly of Bakersville, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at the Abernethy Laurels Every Age Senior Living Center in Newton, NC.  June was the daughter of the late Herbert and Nell Garden Hughes.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ed W. Wilson, Jr. and son, Ed W. Wilson, III.

June was a member of the Bakersville Baptist Church and a charter member of the Roan Mountain Chapter 29 Order of the Eastern Star.  After graduating Bowman High School, June received her Associate Degree from Lees-McRae College.  She then worked for the War Department in Washington, DC during WWII before returning to Bakersville in 1947 where she met Ed Wilson, Jr.  June and Ed embarked on establishing their family farm and raising their family.  June was a wonderful mother and homemaker and church leader at White Oak Baptist Church.  She also worked as a teachers’ assistant at Bowman High School and served as secretary for Mitchell County Farm Bureau.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, David Wilson and wife, Libby; Suellen Wilson Pierce and husband, Danny; and Steve Wilson and wife, Cynthia; also 10 grandchildren of whom she was very proud, and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral service to celebrate June will be 2:00 PM Saturday, July 29, 2023 in Bakersville Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Sutton and Reverend Larry Greene officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  There will be a private family graveside service at the Wilson Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Abernethy Laurels Every Age Senior Living Ctr., 102 Leonard Ave., Newton, NC  28658, or to Bakersville Baptist Church, South Mitchell Ave., Bakersville, NC  28705.
