Jimmie M. Smith, age 88, of Woods Rd, Spruce Pine, NC went home to be with the Lord November 10, 2018. He was a native of Avery County, NC and the son of the late William E. and Myrtle Garland Smith. He was a Veteran of The United States Air Force and a member of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. Jim served in The Strategic Air Command throughout the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

Being a person of many interests Jim enjoyed hiking, trout fishing, playing golf with friends and day trips with friends and family. He was educated at Crossnore School, Lees McRae College and North Carolina State University.

Jim was employed by Duke Power Company as a Design Engineer in the General Office in Charlotte, and retired as Electrical Design Supervisor of Power Plant Engineering after more than 33 years service. During employment years he was active in The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Winterfield Sports Club for Boys, and the Hickory Grove Lions Club.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by half sisters, Florence Hall, of Spruce Pine, NC, Bonnie Hennings, of Kernersville, NC, and half brother, George Garland, of White Pine, TN, sisters, Theresa Johnson, of Spruce Pine, NC, Lucy Stokes, of Tampa, Florida, and Shirley Smith, of Morganton, NC.

Survivors include wife of 62 years, Norma Jean Gage Smith, of the home, sons, William Smith (Robin), of Spruce Pine, NC, Gordon Smith (Terri), of Mint Hill, NC, sisters, Betty S. Taylor, of Morganton, NC Gail Burleson, of Crossnore, NC, granddaughters, Natalia Anzola, of Fort Carson, Colorado, Paige McCaleb, of Wilmington, NC, and Carlina Smith, of Waxhaw, NC, and half brother, Ray H. Garland (Margie), of Raleigh,NC.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 1:00PM in Spruce Pine United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeremy Troxler officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery, with Sgt. EL Randolph Chapter 57 DAV conducting graveside military honors.
