Edwin Leon Rolen

Edwin Leon Rolen, age 87, of Bakersville, NC passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022 at his home. A native of Bakersville, he was the son of the late Edwin Thomas Rolen and Nina Wilson Rolen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Nellie Poole Rolen.

 At the age of seventeen, Edwin joined the Marines, and served in the Korean War and reached the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged. He was a proud Marine who believed in Honor, Loyalty, and Family.

 Edwin retired from Brach's Candy Company in Chicago after working there for many years. He and Nellie retired and moved back to Bakersville in 1992 where they made many friends in the community. They also became active in the McKinney Cove Baptist Church where they became close to their ministers, Don Ford and Todd Ayers, and the caring, loyal members who were generous and faithful in helping them when they needed it.

 Edwin is survived by his son, Tom Rolen and wife Nancy of Knoxville, TN; sisters, Vivian Orr of Bakersville, NC and Jean Grant and husband Mackie of Robbinsville, NC; cousin, Larry Fortner and wife Anita of Bakersville; two grand daughters, Elena Black and husband Glen of Chattanooga, TN and Hannah Rolen of Shelby, NC; three great grandchildren: Emma Black, Lydia Black, and Michael Lineberger; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 26, 2022 in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home with Todd Ayers and Don Ford officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service. Private burial will be in the McKinney Cove Baptist Church Cemetery.

 The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to Edwin's friend, Tommy Dale who provided many hours of personal and devoted care and the staff of Hospice and Home Care of the Blue Ridge for their compassion and assistance during Edwin's illness.
