Darrell Lloyd Slagle

Darrell Lloyd Slagle, age 85 of the Red Hill Community (Bakersville, NC) went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, November 10, 2022.  He was surrounded by his wife of 61 years and his children.  Darrell was born on October 21, 1937 and was the son of Trula Slagle Burroughs.  He was preceded in death by his Mom and his brother Donnie Burroughs.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Louise; Son Joel (Kimberly) Slagle; Daughter Rhonda Slagle; and Son Rodney (Nicole) Slagle. Grandchildren Toby (Lindsay) Slagle, Jacob Slagle, Macy Slagle, Brody Slagle, Koby Slagle, and Grady Slagle.  His first Great Grandson is due to be born in January of 2023.

Darrell graduated from Tipton Hill High School in 1956.  He was an outstanding basketball player achieving All Conference, All Region, and All State accolades.  He continued his education and basketball skills at Lees-McCrae College in Banner Elk, NC.  After college, Darrell joined the Army and served as a Hawk Air Defense Missile System Specialist.  Upon completion of his tour of duty, he returned to his native Mitchell County to live and raise his family.

Darrell worked for Helen’s Drive in Bakersville, NC for over 10 years, then served over 25 years with Unimin Corporation (formerly International Mineral and Chemical Corp.) where he retired in 2001.  He was very active as a member of Red Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Superintendent, and Sunday School Class Teacher. He loved being around his church family.   He served in various leadership positions in the Masonic Lodge (Bakersville Lodge #357 A.F. & A.M.) and was a member of Shriners International.

Darrell was a firm believer in hard work, doing things right the first time and taught strong morals and values while providing for his family.  He was a tobacco farmer, grew his own vegetables, and kept his yard and home pristine.  Darrell volunteered his time to coaching youth in baseball, and he enjoyed teaching and showing his children and grandchildren the fundamentals of basketball.  He loved Duke men’s basketball.  He was an avid grouse, turkey, and deer hunter, and really enjoyed fishing for trout with his good buddies.  In his later years, he enjoyed gardening and telling stories to all who would listen.

Receiving of Friends will begin at 1pm followed by Funeral Service and Burial at 2pm on Monday, November 14, 2022 at Red Hill Baptist Church.  The Reverend Randy Wise will be officiating the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations may be given to Red Hill Baptist Church mission fund (4543 N226 HWY, Bakersville, N.C. 28705).
