Burlie Dean Myers, 69, of Spruce Pine, NC, went home to be with Jesus on April 23, 2021 surrounded by love and family.
Dean was born on August 2 in Union Grove, NC to Ina and Burlie Myers. He graduated from Warren Wilson College in 1973 and moved to Elkin, NC where he met the love of his life, Shelley Boone Myers. Dean and Shelley lived a happy life filled with laughter, joy and adventures for 46 years.
Family and friends were Dean’s life. Being a life-long learner and educator was his passion. He enriched the lives of countless students for decades with his love, patience and kindness.
Dean obtained his Masters in Administration & EDS from Appalachian State University before finding the highlight of his career; being principal at Tipton Hill Elementary for over 20 years. Under his guidance and leadership, Tipton Hill (a rural WNC school) earned the remarkable accolade of #1 School in the State of North Carolina. Dean also served two terms on the Mitchell County Board of Education.
A true man of God, Dean was a member of Lily Branch Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a Deacon. He was actively involved in the church family, Christmas plays and Bible School.
Dean was a friend to everyone he met and generous of his time, love and attention. Never too busy for a visit or a chat, he embraced life and truly appreciated beautiful flowers, sitting on his porch and sneaking in a good nap with his best dog Chester.
