Betty (Davenport) Sparks

Betty June Davenport Sparks, age 89 of Deer Park Lake Rd, Spruce Pine, NC went home to be with the Lord April 21, 2021. She was a native of Avery County, NC and a daughter of the late Orion Lynn and Lockie Viola Wiseman Davenport.

Betty graduated from Crossnore High School and received her Bachelor Degree RN at Grace Memorial Hospital with an affiliation at Duke University and she worked in Washington, DC, and Atlanta Georgia before returning to Spruce Pine Hospital where she worked primarily in the operating room. She also worked for a period of time for Mitchell County Department of Social Services.  She was a loving mother to her children and grandchildren, a caring and helpful neighbor. Betty was always interested in sports gardening and church and was an active member of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church where she was one of the oldest members.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband Rex Sparks, one daughter Christie Sparks Byrd, brothers: Dr. Jack Wendell Davenport and Lloyd Clingman Davenport, sisters: Dorothy Davenport McLeod, Doris Davenport McClure Wallace.

Survivors include: one son Randy Sparks (Sherry), two sisters: Gloria "Tink" Davenport and Dr. Willie Mae Davenport Jackson, loving grandchildren: Noah Byrd, Adam Sparks, and Anna Sparks. Also surviving are 11 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 25, 2021 at 3:00PM in Spruce Pine United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard Schiling and Reverend Randy Wise officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Wiseman Davenport Cemetery. Hanging Rock Rd, Spruce Pine NC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28705.
