Regina Byrd Hughes, 88, of the Pigeon Roost Community went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 11, 2023. She was a native of Mitchell County and a devoted member of Lower Pigeon Roost Freewill Baptist Church. Regina was the daughter of the late R.C. and Myrtle Bradshaw Byrd.

Regina graduated from Tipton Hill High School in 1954 and that same year her basketball team was Toe River Conference Tournament winners. She loved working in her many daylilies and knew the name of each one. Regina loved her dogs especially her Boston Terrier named Babe.

Survivors include her daughter Teresa Young (Mike); grandsons, Brannon Young (Amy), and Bryson Young (Erica) and great grandson Asher Roan Young.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Smith Hughes, sister, Modine Byrd Miller and her beloved precious great granddaughter Maggie Rae Young.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 12:00 Noon in the chapel of Henline-Hughes with Rev. Mark McKinney officiated. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private burial will follow in the Bennett Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Maggie Rae Young Memorial Scholar Fund c/o United Community Bank in Bakersville, NC.
