Obituary

Dateline: Bakersville, NC

Peggy Allbaugh Greene, resident of Bakersville and Winston Salem (Kernersville) died February 26 following a courageous confrontation with illness, enduring with her quick wit and great sense of humor. She was a glittering kind of person, a generous friend, neighbor, gracious hostess, wonderful cook, and homemaker. She was also a lover of dogs and songbirds, and taking joy of beautifying her yard and home as well as vacations with family and friends to the beach and other travels.

Peggy delighted in making people laugh and living each moment as it comes, uplifting strangers and friends with her impromptu stream of uproarious thoughts and opinions. She did not let herself be defined by negative circumstances.

She was born in Mansfield Ohio on September 14, 1945 to Velma Volk and Harry Allbaugh. She was especially fond of her sisters Rose and Dorothy.

Living on a farm for her first 8 years, Peggy loved doing animal chores with her father before the family moved to town. After graduating from high school, where she was a student leader and a natural extemporaneous speaker, Peggy married Bruce Greene of Fork Mountain, Bakersville, NC her wonderful husband of 51 years and had their "almost perfect son" Kent. He and his wife Lisa gave Peggy and Bruce "the joy of their life" Ryan Christopher. The Greene extended family still lives near the remodeled home place on Fork Mountain, where Peggy and Bruce lived for 5 years after retirement.

During the years after her son's graduation, Peggy worked at Borg Warner in Cary, NC, for 5 years in the Inspection and Quality Control Dept. While there she received an award from the Governor of NC for her service as secretary of the National Welding Society. Peggy trained and worked as a CNA in 1998 and attended enough community college classes to add up to an Associates Degree in Arts and Science. She was greatly loved by the students and faculty at the elementary school in Kernersville where she was volunteer of the year in 2004, then assistant teacher and teacher in the kindergarten over a 10 year period.

Peggy was a lifelong learner interested in a wide range of subjects from history and politics to the sciences. She was also a great storyteller and dancer, and fun to be with. If there was ever an outburst of laughter in a room, a doctors office, hospital, or restaurant, you could find Peggy in the midst with a sly smile on her face. She will be greatly missed.
