Dateline: Bakersville, NC (Buladean Community)

Olean Hughes Arrowood, age 96 of the Buladean Community went home to be with the Lord February 26, 2026.

A native of Mitchell County, NC she was a daughter of the late Waites and Geneva McKinney Hughes.

Olean attended Odoms Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.  She enjoyed singing, gardening, and taking care of her flowers. She especially loved cooking for her family and spending time with them.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband Mack Henry Arrowood, her son Danny Wayne Arrowood, a granddaughter Tammy Carver, her twin sister Pauline Whitehead, and her son in law Billy Greene.

Survivors include five children: Ruth Carver, of Elizabethton, TN, Carolyn Chandley, of Johnson City, TN, Doug Arrowood (Vivian), of Bakersville, NC, Dale Greene, of Jonesborough, TN, and Brian Arrowood (Dianne), of Hampton, TN, one sister Myrtle Thomas, of Burnsville, NC, nine grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, March 1, 2026 at 3:00PM at The Arrowood Family Cemetery on Arrowood Lane in Bakersville, NC with Pastor Cody Greene officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Holloway, Peyton Hopson, Josh Hyder, Shannon Garland, and David Caughron. Honorary pallbearer will be Logan Chandley.
