Nell Buchanan Young, age 92, joyfully left this life for the glory of Heaven, on October 3, 2015 .

She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a daughter of the late Zeb and Bertie Wilson Buchanan.

Nell worked for the Federal Government for 35 years where she served as Mitchell County Director of the Agriculture, Stabilization, and Conservation Office. She was the first woman in North Carolina to serve in this position. She retired and then began devoting her time as a leader and enthusiastic member of the Bakersville Improvement Group, where she developed the idea for "The Bakersville Creek Walk". She raised money and  implemented the lighting system on the Creek Walk. She was also the President of The Clarissa Community Center until 3 years ago. Nell was the Treasurer and a Fundraiser for both Green B. Young and Buchanan Cemeteries for many years. She was a faithful and lifelong member at Roan Mountain Baptist Church where she served as Clerk and Treasurer for 50 years. Nell was always a leader in her work and community efforts.

Survivors include: her loving husband, Joe Young, of the home, her daughter; Suzanne Y. Owens, of Newland , NC , her sister; EmmaLee B. Sparks, of Bakersville, NC, her brother; Warren Buchanan, and wife Maxie, of Burnsville, NC, grandchildren; Jennifer Ledford, of Bakersville, NC, Joseph Ledford, and wife Heather, of Auburn, Alabama, great grandchildren; Lochlin Todd Vance Jr., and wife Emily, of Bakersville, NC, Chloe and  Hezekiah, and a great great granddaughter; Gracelynn.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by two sisters, Grace Buchanan Ellis and Christine B. Young.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 3:00PM in Roan Mountain Baptist Church with Tim Fowler and Mark McKinney officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow at Green B. Young Cemetery.
