Jessie Buchanan Hughes, age 91 of Green Cove Rd, Bakersville, NC passed away April 4, 2013 at her home. She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a daughter of the late Dewey D. and Bertie Gouge Buchanan. She was a Member of Bakersville Baptist Church and The Order of the Eastern Star Roan Mountain Chapter # 29 where she served as Worthy Grand Matron and Representative to Alberta, Canada. She was a Veteran of The United States Navy where she served as an Operating Room Surgical Technician in several locations. She was Co Owner of Three Peaks Orchard.

Survivors include; her son, John D. Hughes Jr., of Bakersville, NC, a brother, Dewey Buchanan Jr., of Morristown, TN, and a sister, Nell Buchanan Johnston, of Fredericksburg, TX.

She was preceded in death by; her husband, John Deward Hughes, daughters, Laura Ann Hughes and Valloere Hughes, and her sisters, Joan Buchanan McKinney, and Willie Ruth McCullough, and a brother, Melvin Buchanan.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 8, 2013 at 7:00PM in the chapel of Henline – Hughes Funeral Home with Don Stafford and Billy Stewart officiating. The Order of The Eastern Star Roan Mountain Chapter #29 will conduct Funeral Honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 11:00AM at Bakersville Memorial Cemetery with The North Carolina Honor Guard conducting Military Funeral Honors.
