Obituary

Fred "Wayne" Berryhill, February 11, 1935 - June 25, 2022, age 87. Wayne was born in Mecklenburg County, NC to the late Fredrick Wainwright Berryhill, Sr. and Margaret Garrison Berryhill. In addition ti his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a step-son, Spencer H. Allen, brothers-in-law, Charles Robinson, John "Jack" Boyd, and Stephen Parker Boyd; and a sister-in-law, Anne B. Berryhill. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Florence Boyd Berryhill; step-sons, Everette (Angie) Justus and Mark Justus; sisters, Alice Richardson (Warren) and Evelyn Robinson; and brother, Stuart Berryhill; step grandchildren, Lance (Maggie) Justus and Amanda Justus and several nieces and nephews.

Wayne graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte. He was a farmer, tire mechanic and a Terminix employee. Wayne served as an elder in the Steel Creek Presbyterian Church and was the Boy Scout Master for Troup number 56 in Charlotte.

In 1980 he and Florence moved to Bakersville where they raised Christmas trees and he was employed as a carpenter. They owned and operated The Mitchell Express, a small specialized tour company. Wayne served as an elder and Sunday School teacher in the Vians Valley Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed western square dancing, rebuilding vintage tractors, camping, traveling, fishing, The Grand Ole Opry, plowing with his mule, Joe, and tomato sandwiches.

Wayne was a devout man, with strong principals. He was a quiet man whose strength of character served as an inspiration to those who's lives he touched. He always placed the needs of those he cared about above his own. He will be greatly missed.

A graveside celebration of life service will be held July 23, 2022 at  2:00PM  at The Old Steele Creek Cemetery in Charlotte, NC.

On July 30, at 2:00PM a memorial service for Wayne will be held at The Vians Valley Presbyterian Church in Bakersville, NC.
