Dateline: Beech Mountain, NC

Carolyn Garland West age 76 of Beech Mountain, NC went home to be with the Lord September 8, 2022. She was a native of Kingstree, SC and the daughter of the late Fred and Iris Johnson Garland. Carolyn moved to Loafers Glory with her parents at a very young age and considered Mitchell County her true home. She graduated from Bowman High School and then went on to Appalachian State University where she received both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees before receiving her Doctorate in education from Nova University. Carolyn was retired from both Western Piedmont Community College and Lees McRae College where she was a Dean. She was a member and elder at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the hand bell choir. She was very involved in the Beech Mountain Community, and historical society. She was Director Emeritus of  The New Opportunities School For Women Foundation.

Survivors include her son Jeremiah West ( Dr. Susan), of Arden, NC, two grandchildren Michael Anderson (Juliana), of Newport News, Virginia, and Matthew Anderson, of Kernersville, NC, sister in law Judy Gaines, of Beaufort, SC, 2 great grandsons Charlie and Theo Anderson, two nieces Debbie Reich and Dana Hronchek.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband John Franklin West.

Funeral services will be held September 16, 2022 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with Reverend Kathy Campbell and Reverend Jim Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Green Young Cemetery.
