Brown Gortney, age 91, of Green Mountain , passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Ancil and Addie Woody Gortney and the husband of the late Maxine Hobson Gortney who preceded him in death on June 25, 1993.. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen, a grandson, George Lee Thaxton and a sister, Mildred Boone.

A farmer all of his life, he was a member of the Deyton Bend United Methodist Church , and frequently attended services at the Ridge View Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his children, son Roy and wife Ellen of Springfield, IL and daughter Joan Gortney of Charleston , WV . He was also survived by six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in conjunction with burial at the Red Hill Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 31, 2015 .
