Awanda Faith Ford Fisher, age 83, entered eternity with her Saviour, Jesus Christ on May 12, 2026, after over a decade long battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia. She was also a leukemia survivor. Awanda was preceded in death by her parents, Buster and Blanche Ford, and her husband James Fisher.
Awanda was born in Avery County during the winter of 1943. She overcame many obstacles in her life and graduated from Newland High School in 1961. She worked as a housewife and in various manufacturing and service jobs.
Awanda was a loving and caring sister, wife, daughter and aunt. She loved people, the color purple and all things Elvis Presley. She was talented at embroidery, coloring and baking black walnut cakes.
Awanda gave her heart to Jesus as a teenager. She became a member of White Oak Baptist Church when she moved to Mitchell County. Previously living in Henderson County, she attended Mills River United Methodist Church. Going to church and the Senior Center were a special part of her life.
Awanda’s life was altered when she could no longer care for herself. Alzheimer’s disease changed her personality, robbed her ability to eat and communicate, and took her memory. However, it did not steal her salvation and love for the Lord. Her place in God’s kingdom as His child is now safe and secure.
Awanda will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include: three brothers; Don Ford and wife Deborah of Spruce Pine, Dale Ford of Newland, and Bill Ford and wife Jann of Shelby. She is survived by two nieces, Sarah Ford of Nairobi, Kenya, and Scottie Crenshaw of Charlotte, one nephew, Albert Ford of Lawndale, as well as numerous cousins.
Services will be held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 2:00PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Reverend Jason Kritz and Reverend Andrew McKinney will officiate. Private burial will be at Hughes Cemetery in Newland.
Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer’s Research Foundation or Hospice of The Blue Ridge. Special thanks to their staff for their invaluable service during her illness and death including: Lauren, Brittany, Lacy and Amanda. The assistance of Jill, Debbie, Danielle, Ashley, Katie, Anita, Tracie, and Rachel is appreciated.
Please keep Awanda’s family in prayer.
Henline – Hughes Funeral Service is honored to be assisting the family.
