Mary Geneva Horne Harrell, 93, of the Harrell Hill Community of Bakersville, NC, joined her Savior on July 17, 2018. Wife of A.D. Harrell of the Harrell Hill Community and daughter of Jesse and Cora Collins Horne of Green Creek, NC, Geneva lived with devotion to Christ, family and community. She set an example of love and graciousness that lives in her memory.
Geneva was a hard working partner with her husband of 69 years on Harrell Hill Farms, a leader in Mitchell County Home Demonstration, the Brethren Church and many other community and civic organizations. She served as the Mitchell County Farm Bureau Insurance Agency Manager for more than 19 years, the first NC female agency manager for the company. Geneva lent a helping hand including delivering babies in a snow storm, making food baskets, feeding newborn calves, teaching Sunday and Bible School, and opening her home and heart to anyone interested in good company, a nutritious meal and a time of acceptance and joy.
Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and six siblings: Jesse Eugene Horne, Charles Howard Horne, William Raymond Horne Sr., Lois Horne Roach, Linda Kay Horne Reep, and Richard Edwin Horne Sr.. Geneva is survived by her sisters Janice Marie Horne Fagan of Green Creek, NC and Maggy Imogene Horne Burns of Inman, SC; her children and their spouses Alfred Douglas Harrell married to Barbara Buchanan, Judith Ann Harrell Portlock married to David, Larry Horne Harrell married to Henrietta Webb, and Rose Marie Harrell Johnson married to Tony. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and their spouses: Cyndi Harrell McDaniel married to Jason, Jenny Harrell Catron married to Jeff, Tony Harrell married to Kate, Greta Harrell Greeson married to Shaun, Greg Harrell married to Christy, Tiffany Hickey, Adam Harrell married to Allison, Melissa Harrell, Brian Easter, Tara Garland married to Richie, Jeremy Boston married to Jennifer, Jesse Portlock, Valiery Portlock married to Stephanie, and Natalia Portlock. She is also survived by 30 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Ledger on Saturday July 21: visitation, 5-7 p.m.; funeral service at 7 p.m. Interment will be Sunday July 22 at 2 p.m. at the Harrell Family Cemetery in Harrell Hill. Memorials may be made in Geneva’s honor to Hospice and Palliative Care of Blue Ridge.
