BETTY ALICE GARLAND HARVELL
Betty Alice Garland Harvell was born
11.28.1929 to Bill
Garland and Gertrude Garland
She has a
special affinity for the mountains of North Carolina and has made
them her home most of her life, Her love for the environment of the
mountains has been her reason
for being a unique Individual who
did things for the preservation of wildlife,
nature,
rare flowers and trees, she has taken many many walks in the woods
she
so loved.
Betty graduated from Appalachian State University
with a BA degree in English and
attended
the University of North Carolina where she obtained her Masters
degree
in
Library Science.
She came back to Mitchell County and taught at Bowman High
School.
She latter
moved
to
East Yancey High School in Burnsville, North Carolina, and she
retired from teaching there. She still knows and keeps up
with many of her students
today. As she specialized in Library Science, she has
always had a great love for books
plays, movies,
music, art and education.
After retirement she has enjoyed doing many
activities like basket weaving, knitting and
making
quilts. She has always enjoyed the special gifts
of
people in the crafts especially work
done in
the mountains. She played the piano, has always been a Presbyterian
and
played
for the Buladean Presbyterian. Church, as well as
taught Sunday School.
It
would be remiss
not
to say that Betty was a lively democrat, worked the elections many
years and never hesitated
to
write her congressman about issues she felt were important,
she made
her voice heard. She participated actively in the Democratic Women’s
Club and made many friends
there. She was a strong spokeswoman for all activities, she also
belonged to the Fork Mountain Homemaker's Club and thoroughly
enjoyed her trips with her friends and always was very
positive about
the
work they did. Many
of
her friends today are from the
club.
Betty is predeceased by her husband William Earl
Harvell, and survived by three children-
two daughters and one son, Ann Pi card, Orange Beach, Alabama Jo
Lynn Chmura. Woodstock, Georgia, and
Billy
Harvell, Bakersville, North Carolina. Her twin
brother, Billy Garland,
of Anderson, South
Carolina, also survives her.
Betty lived life as her own person, she has requested
her ashes be spread in the woods behind her house and feels her
spirit will always
be
alive
in
the native woods and
mountains she
so loved of
North Carolina.
Memorial
services will be held Saturday, May 12 at 11:00AM in Buladean
Presbyterian Church with Curtis Crowther officiating. The family
will receive friends from 10:30 until the service time.
The
family would like to express their thanks to Hospice of Mitchell
County and all of Betty’s friends and caregivers who assisted during
her illness.
